How much do extensions cost & how long will they take to install?

There is a lot to consider in regards to dreadlock extensions. Do you have dreads already? or needing new dreads as well? Do you have shaved areas or just wanting peekaboo dreads? Are you wanting them permanently attached or braided in? Are you wanting your extensions made from human hair, synthetic or wool? All of these questions will vary the price & time needed to create your new look so please consider all these questions & read through this section to help you decide. Feel free to message me on Facebook or Email for a detailed price/time quote & to book an appointment.

I’m not sure I want to commit to permanent dreads, How long do braid in dreads last?

Braid in dreads are a great way to try out dreads before taking the plunge into a permanent style. Depending on your wash routine braid ins can last 6-8 weeks before needing to be reinstalled & the set of dreadlocks you choose to purchase can be reinstalled over & over again making it quite cost effective with little to no damage to your hair. The dreads themselves can be made in synthetic or woollen materials & made as SE (single ended) or DE (double ended) dreadlocks depending on how much volume you are after. Sorry human hair dreadlock extensions are not an option with this style. For more info on the difference between SE & DE please go to the Woollen Dreadlocks FAQ page.

I don’t have dreads yet, how should I prepare?

If we are starting your Journey from scratch with new dreads & extensions please read the New Dreads FAQ page for more info.

Do you make custom extensions?

I specialise in 100% hand made woollen dreadlocks & can custom make a set of extensions to suit your needs. Check out the Woollen Dreadlock FAQ page for info on custom options. If you’d prefer human hair or synthetic dreadlock extensions I can order a custom set for you from a reputable maker.

Should I choose human hair, synthetic or woollen extensions?

This is a tricky question as all look & behave in different ways & personal preference plays a big part. So I suppose asking yourself a couple of questions will help you decide.

Which look do you like best? If you’ve seen a photo on the internet of a particular look you love try messaging the website or page/artist to see what materials they used or send me a photo & we’ll work it out together.

Are there ethical reasons for your decision? Wanting to avoid human exploitation, wanting to reduce plastics from the environment, or not wanting to use animal products are all things to take into consideration. Do some googling, ask questions on forums, talk to people you know about their experiences or message me, the more research you do the better informed you’ll be.

Cost, do you have a budget in mind?

The big question that everyone wants to know, which is better?!!

I’d like to start by saying, this is based on the research I’ve done over the years & my experiences. In no way is this meant to be a judgement on you & your choices, everyone’s dread journey is different & so it should be.

Human Hair…. Is the most natural looking. Is also the most expensive. Takes time to mature & lock up so shedding & slipping of the extensions can happen. May require ongoing maintenance as they mature. It’s not always sourced ethically & the quality is not always great, some companies market their hair as Remy or virgin when it is not so buyer be aware. The hair has gone through massive chemical processes to match the texture & colour of Caucasian hair which diminishes & weakens the fibres. It can be dyed using hair dye, yes this is true BUT due to the chemical process its been through it may not take the dye quite the same way as your own hair so may come out a different colour & can turn purple when using a toner or toning shampoo. Takes a while to dry & can be heavy to ware.

Synthetic…. Is mid range price wise. Comes in heaps of different colour options but can not be dyed. The fibres are synthetic so if you don’t like plastic…… Can be scratchy & stiff, although the stiffness does diminish as you where them over time. They can be heavy even when dry but they do dry fast when wet. They don’t need time to mature so shedding wont be an issue & may not require ongoing maintenance. Easy to care for. Can also be supplied in SE or DE for braid in or accent dreads.

Wool…. Is more price variant so more customisable to your budget. 100% hand made so can be any colour you like or custom matched to suit your hair colour. Different textures to choose from. They are durable & easy to care for. Softer, more flexible & lighter to ware then synthetics. Heavy when wet & take around the same time to dry as human hair dreadlocks. They are made from animal fibres. Can also be supplied in SE or DE for braid in or accent dreads.
